Battery Energy Storage Projects: hep solar Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Toshiba ESS for Future Partnership

The German solar specialist hep solar has signed a memorandum of understanding with Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions (Toshiba ESS) regarding a future partnership. Under the agreement, hep solar will oversee the development of several sites in Japan for high-voltage battery energy storage projects. Toshiba ESS will serve as a partner for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) as well as for sales through aggregation services.

As renewable energy continues to expand worldwide, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are playing an increasingly important role. This is because they help improve the reliability of the power grid by feeding electricity into the grid when production is too low, and by counteracting negative prices by storing excess electricity. This can help stabilize the power grid in the future.

Martin Vogt, Global Head of Project Development at hep solar: “This is a significant milestone for hep solar and marks our company’s entry into the BESS sector. We look forward to developing the first battery storage systems in the coming months.”

Shigeki Yamane, Senior Director of Project Execution at hep solar: “Japan’s high-voltage BESS market is experiencing aggressive growth through fiscal year 2028 due to the government’s energy policy. This presents an excellent opportunity to achieve commercial operation for high-voltage BESS projects by 2028. Beyond our first two projects in Hokkaido, we also intend to pursue potential project candidates in profitable regions such as Tohoku and Kanto. We are working closely with Toshiba ESS on the selection process to achieve our goals.”

Yuji Shimada, General Manager at Toshiba ESS: “We hope to use this memorandum of understanding as an opportunity to further expand project development with hep solar.”
